A common question amongst our Shavehead Lake residents is why do we have two different associations? A big thank you to Russ Fish for helping to clarify. This is an interesting read and has an important takeaway --- please join the associations!
Membership Drive: A letter from the BoardHello Shavehead Lake Neighbors, Summer 2020 is coming upon us soon and with that thought, I wanted to bring you to date with the (SLA) Shavehead Lake Association’s plans for this season. The SLA has already committed to Kieser & Associated over $7K for the following: “Early and Late Season” Aquatic Weed Survey and documentation services, this is in addition with that being provided by Aquatic Weed Control for our aquatic weed monitoring and control efforts. “Harmful Algae Bloom” (HAB) testing and training are scheduled to be done and the last item contracted with Kieser & Associates is a “Watershed Nutrient Loading Analysis / memo”. Last year, SLA spent over $6K for the testing and control of Aquatic Weeds in Shavehead Lake, some of these monies were from the contributions from last year’s Membership Drive and the SLA General Fund covering the remaining. Canadian Goose Applications and Permits have been filed for Nest and Egg Destruction with the intention of the Goose Relocation capture scheduled for around the 2nd or 3rd week of June. Last year, SLA spent close to $2K for the Goose Relocation program. As we get closer to the capture date, a SLA Blast email will be sent out requesting help with the round‐up. I think last year the Geese got a tip when the round‐up was to take place because they were at the furthest point of the lake from the corral site that they could possibly be, but “Thanks” to our many lake neighbors that were able to help with the round‐up, the geese were herded to the corral site in no time at all. I can still visualize the 10 watercraft rounding the end of the peninsula with 53 geese ahead of them. My, it was so peaceful the remaining days of June, July and part of August without them being here! We have committed $9K towards this year’s fireworks with the ability to increase the show at a later date based upon donations, so we ask that you submit your contribution and membership fee as promptly as possible. With our early commitment, we were able to lock‐in preferential pricing and beat an anticipated price increase before it goes into effect but also confirm a scheduled July 4th celebration date. Last year $13K was spent on the fireworks display and we need your contributions to make this year’s celebration better. Thanks to Camp Friedenswald, their North East beach area, this is where the fireworks will be shot off again this July 4th at dusk. Social activities such as; Floating Friday’s and Saturday’s, The Kid Carnival, the Shavehead Lake Flotilla and Fireworks, Electric Light Parade, Pooch Parade and Wheels Parade and the Shavehead Poker Run are all fun. What a great way to meet your Lake Neighbors! Dates for these activities are subject to be cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus conditions at this time, but will be posted in the newsletter as well as the Face Book and Website pages. Like the Floating Friday and Saturday events, your participation and Hosts are needed, as with the other activities outlined above, whether with your monetary donation, help with setup / teardown or judging these events, we cannot continue to have these activities without YOU! Our Shavehead Lake Newsletter is also looking for any new ideas, pictures or interesting articles pertaining to lake environmental issues or lake life living, we would entertain your editorial contribution towards our newsletter. This year Flotilla theme is: “Favorite Movies”. This should be interesting to see where some of your ideas take us this year. We ask that you pre‐register your watercraft for the July 4th event. Start point will be behind the island, start time @ 3 P.M. Prizes will be awarded upon the conclusion of the parade. Shavehead Lake Poker Run is scheduled for August 8th, please let us know if you’re interested in helping with setup / teardown of the tents, cleanup crew or general helpers. Your help can make this year’s event the best ever! We will be posting pre‐order information regarding the Shavehead Lake Poker Run merchandise at the Face Book and Shavehead Lake Websites in the near future. In the works is the Shavehead Lake Fall dinner. Last fall, 55 people were in attendance, enjoying great food and drink and memories at Lucchese’s Italian Restaurant. Updated information will be posted in the Shavehead Lake Newsletter as we get closer to the date. In closing, we are asking for your support in our lake association. The accompanying sheet of this letter is the information request and mail back page, please complete and send back in the enclosed postage paid envelope. Thanks you for your continued interest is making Shavehead Lake the very best it can be. 2019 on Shavehead Lake
Please update your address!Postal office changes Several residents have discovered a new policy with the Cassopolis Post Office that their house on Shavehead Lake has been deemed 'vacant' and they can no longer receive mail. We don't have any answers for this yet - if anyone has found any useful information, please let us know. In the meantime, if you are one of the unlucky ones to have experienced this, please let us know another address if you would like to receive mailings. Also, if you are new to Shavehead lake, please take a moment to register! | Have photos to share?Send your photos and we will add them to the photo gallery! |
Aquatic Weed ControlThe Shavehead Lake Association is spearheading efforts to control invasive weeds on Shavehead Lake. But many residents also have nuisance weeds and there has been some confusion over what to do about them. More information is coming on the invasive weeds and the plan, but in the meantime, if you would like to discuss solutions for nuisance weeds, you can contact Sediment Removal Solutions. They are state licensed to provide services to our lake. Several neighbors have coordinated to have treatment done for their houses and have been happy with the results. No more raking the weeds yourself! Sediment Removal Solutions Jim Donahoe Office: 574-533-2597 Email: jim@aquaticweedcontrol.com |
